April Fools' is Over, but These Scams Are No Joke

The pranks of April 1st may be over, but for New York businesses, the real threats are just beginning. Spring is one of the most productive seasons for hackers because teams are busy and moving fast. At CETech, we see even the sharpest employees fall for scams that look like a normal part of the workday.

Here are the three most dangerous scams circulating right now:

1. The Toll Road Text

Attackers send a text claiming you have an unpaid toll balance (often around $6.99) and must pay immediately to avoid late fees.

  • The Trap: It names real systems like E-ZPass or SunPass. Because the amount is small, it doesn't trigger alarm bells.

  • The Reality: The FBI received over 60,000 complaints about these texts in 2024 alone.

  • The Fix: Legitimate toll agencies do not demand payment via text links. Always go directly to the official website.

2. The 'Your File Is Ready' Email

This scam mimics notifications from trusted platforms like OneDrive, SharePoint, or DocuSign.

  • The Trap: The email looks exactly like a standard file-share notification. When you click to "view the document," you are prompted to enter your work credentials.

  • The Reality: Employees are seven times more likely to click a malicious link from OneDrive than from a random email.

  • The Fix: If a shared file wasn't expected, do not click the link. Log into the platform directly through your browser to see if the file exists.

3. AI-Generated Phishing

The days of broken grammar and obvious typos are over.

  • The Trap: Scammers use AI to write professional emails that reference real company names, job titles, and internal workflows scraped from LinkedIn.

  • The Reality: AI-generated phishing emails have a 54% click rate, compared to just 12% for human-written ones.

  • The Fix: Treat urgency as a warning sign. Any request involving credentials or payment changes must be verified through a second channel, like a phone call.

Stop Being a Target

Real security is about process, not just people. If one rushed click can derail your business, your current process is the problem. CETech helps New York businesses close these gaps with proactive IT management and 24/7 support.
